Advanced English Language Arts 11 - Century High School

This course includes a survey of American literature from the Civil War to the present. Students should be motivated readers and able to persist through challenging material (i.e., early american novels such as The Scarlet Letter, Huckleberry Finn) independently without the help of Sparknotes, rereading difficult passages as needed. Writing assignments are research based and require student to seek information on their own from credible sources and incorporate it using MLA style. Vocabulary work will be intensely focused on preparation for standardized college placement tests (SAT, etc.). Students will be expected to give presentations and actively participate in class discussions and activities. Students must be able to devote at least one hour of homework time for each class session.
